After a short time of photocatalysis, TiO2 (titanium dioxide) showed strong hydrophilicity and biological activity; When the ultraviolet (UV) radiation energy exceeds 3.2 eV, the titanium surface will release electrons and generate oxygen holes. The photocatalytic surface has been proved to be more able to attract osteoblast adhesion and promote cell differentiation and proliferation at the same time. Therefore, it is more efficient to restore the surface bioactivity of implant materials immediately before surgery than to "preserve" them for a long time.

 

Through photocatalysis, the implant material changes as follows: Surface charge change of implant pure titanium: The surface of fresh titanium and photo functionalized titanium is positive. In the humoral environment, the protein and cell surface were negatively charged, and the positively charged titanium surface had electrostatic effect, which promoted the early implant surface protein and cell adhesion. Removal of impurities on implant surface: Photocatalytic surface generates strong oxidizing hydroxyl groups, hydrocarbons are oxidized and decomposed, surface hydrophobic substances are degraded, resulting in liquid droplets spreading under the action of gravity and tension, which shows hydrophilicity. Principle of empty acupoints: Ultraviolet light irradiation energy exceeds 3.2eV, electrons will be released on the titanium surface, and empty acupoints will be generated. At this time, the hydrolysis dissociation in the air is adsorbed in the vacancy, forming hydroxyl, and the water in the air is further adsorbed, forming a physical adsorption layer, thus forming a hydrophilic microenvironment around trivalent titanium.
